Hey, did y'all know Robert Mugabe lost the elections in Zimbabwe? It might be a little outside the average bald and fading Gen X Tarantino-inhaling spectrum, I know, but bear with me.

Robert Mugabe, for those who spent their time reading up on more important things like what shades of chartreuse are hip this autumn and whether you should buy "organic" or "biodynamic" is, basically, the president of Zimbabwe, and a huge thundercunt of a man. His despotic regime including beatings - not in the "cool" Patrick Swayze Roadhouse style, sorry - of political opponents as well as pretty much killing off freedom of the press (so if you were there, it might be hard to find a copy of People magazine) and the sort of inflation not seen since 1920's Germany - to the point where it takes a shoebox of notes to buy a loaf of bread - sadly, neither organic nor biodynamic. Mugabe also claimed homosexuality "degrades human dignity" - so no REM concerts in Harare - sorry! Ol' Bob also bulldozed, Israel-style, a few thousand slum-dwellers homes. And not to build some fine Fair Trade cafés with free wi-fi so you can sit conspicuously typing your screenplay on your iBook, as well as a few luxury "studio style" apartments.

At any rate, Mugabe surprised the few who were watching (the others, obviously, watching more pressing issues, like Paris Hilton's disinheritance) by not arse-raping (like what happened to Edward Norton in American History X in the prison showers!) the ballot boxes and ending up with himself re-elected with a 99.9% approval rating.

Now, to show I'm open to debate, I'm not going to unequivocally state that these elections will affect more people in much more profound ways - to the point of whether or not some of those might live or die or end up homeless (in this case, being downgraded from a cardboard shanty to the underside of a bridge, as opposed to being downgraded from First Class to Business) or whether or not having a lot of money is the same as having a lot of cash - subtle differnces, I suppose, y'know?

Fuck me dead.

Second that with standing ovation!

Btw. after saying stuff like "announcing success before the release of official results would be treated as a coup d’etat" and "President Mugabe is going nowhere. We are not going to be pressured into anything." it looks like Robert Mugabe has already left the country. At least he failed to show up for a planed televised statement Yesterday, which should have shown that he is till in the country.

Maybe, things will go up again for africas corn granary. But, as tradition demands, a civil war will have to come first.

Perhaps not. Him trying to stay in power after the elections (by rigging the outcome or whatever) would certainly have led to a violent conflict. Maybe his leaving will diffuse the situation a bit. It's not like he has much followers anymore, so the opposition should be able to settle in without a struggle.

Unfortunately the "deputy information minister" reports that "The army is very solidly behind our president, the police force as well". Let's hope this means the position of President and they will move their loyalty to the new President, rather than being loyal to Mugabe himself.

And the Hilton news is from December...

I suppose spectating has its uses. Clearly sharpens one's prose.

The Zanu-PF catastrophe is one of the gravest arguments against immortality. There do exist embers of hope, the struggle remains spreading them.

Why not persuade granpa Hilton to give that 97% to cover a bit of The Debt? That would be considered charity, no?

Communism.
That would be considered communism, and probably an act of terrorism.

You know handouts would just be rewarding the US government for its laziness and bad behavior. It's unfair to all the hard working governments out there. The US government should get its ass off the couch and get a real job, that's what I say.

I was thinking along similar lines when I heard something about the economy today. If one gutted the salaries of these executives and their ilk, one might be able to save some of these banks and companies from going tits up.

The interesting (re: hideous) thing about all the economic catastrophe being bandied about is that it's unlikely to effect the people who already have loads of money.

The executives will get their golden parachutes or whatever it is they call their multi-million dollar bailouts and thievery, the politicians will be unharmed, things will likely remain unchanged.

The middle class will be the ones who get hit, again, by people's persistent beliefs in imaginary systems of commerce.

I for one welcome the apocalypse, it will give us on planet Earth a very brief period where good are valued based on their actual value and not their perceived value in a decadent and rather silly society incapable of coming to terms with it's own propensity toward violence and sex, to say nothing of more complicated psychological issues.

The country seems to be about 14.

And why is always THE apocalypse, never 'an' apocalypse? Focus groups like us want to see several alternate endings before the final cut gets aired.
