I don't think meanness helped the last President -- tho I think he had it in spades.

More and more I suspect our current president had\has no idea what so ever about anything at all. The idea of him getting more and more stressed and retreating deeper and deeper in to alcohol, coke, benzos, SSRIs, MAOI's, funnel cloud of reality-retreat (it's all so *calm* here!) is quite appealing.

I suppose I mean less "mean" than...something like that. A kind of ruthlessness. Bosses have to fire people occasionally. Companies have to shut down projects, let things whither on the vine, all of that. Obama makes me suspicious about his abilities in that regard.

Futhermore I suppose I disagree about meanness helping GeeDub and his cronies (or is he one of the cronies?) they seemed quite brutal and ruthless about going about getting what they wanted. And. They *have* gotten most of what they wanted have they not?

So then....wasn't "meanness" (or whatever you care to call it) actually quite helpful to them?

I guess perhaps ruthless is more correct. I think of it in the military sense of having to order troop movements, knowing, as they do, that some of those troops you're moving WILL die. They'll probably die "pointlessly" as well.

It could be argued that such ability, the ability to send others to their deaths, is a bad thing, but taking that same capability out of that context, the ability to make hard decisions, and then live with them, can O-blama do that? Personally I'm not sure.

I wouldn't want it to be overemphasized in the character of a future national leader, but I'd like it to be a trait they possess at least a little bit of.

On a day when the stock market is tanking by over 300 points, unemployment is rising dramatically and crude oil is trading at almost $140.00 a barrel, I don't see people turning to John McCain, who wants more war in the middle east (thus even higher oil prices) and who readily admits he knows nothing about economics. The conditions in this country are unlike anything in recent election cycles. Not to mention the incredible fatigue of republican rule that's set in after 8 years of the Bush reign of error.

Again from the article I linked to earlier.
quote:
McCain has been able to stay close to parity in polls matching him with Obama, but that is the product of the bashing Obama has taken from the Clinton campaign. Once that internal scrap is behind him and he can go head to head against McCain, his polling is going to soar.

Even in fund-raising, a traditional Republican strength, the Republicans are at a disadvantage. At last reported count, Obama had $51 million in cash on hand; McCain had $11 million. In the combined cash of the national party committees, Republicans had $55.5 million; Democrats $87.1 million. The netroots has raised unprecedented amounts of money for Democrats, especially Obama; labor unions have gone deeper into their pockets and are raising more money for Democrats than in prior elections; and, even business PACs have given more money to Democrats! Business blows with the wind, and it knows which way the wind is blowing.

Simply put, this is the worst possible time for any Republican to be running for president. And this is not simply my opinion; it is an opinion that has many adherents in the Republican Party and among traditional Republican supporters.

Oooopsie, looks like the stock market has fallen ANOTHER hundred points since I posted this. It's now off more than 400 points today.

McCain's got no hope.

People don't have the luxury of voting about flag pins or any of the other nonsense that republicans have relied on in the past to win. This time for the American public it's going to be about saving their asses from the incredible shit storm Bush/McCain and their republican cohorts have set in motion during their 8 years of almost total control of this country.

Interesting note re: fundraising. Yesterday the DNC (under Howard Dean's signature) sent out an email saying that the Democratic Party will not accept donations from lobbyists.

quote:
As we move toward the general election, the Democratic Party has to be the Party of ordinary Americans, not Washington lobbyists and special interests. So, as of this morning, if you're a federal lobbyist, or if you control political action committee donations, we won't be accepting your contribution.

This is an unprecedented move for a political party to make -- one that has sent shockwaves through Washington and has turned the debate on clean campaigns upside down. We've unilaterally agreed to shut lobbyists out of the process, and are we're relying on people just like you.

I feel about Obama the way I imagine Americans felt about FDR in '36. I also enjoy how he just brain-melts so-called conservative opposition.

Plus his wife is the closest thing to Jackie O since, um, Jackie O. She doesn't still photograph that great, but in action she is strikingly beautiful and more poised than Barack.

I will have no truck with cautious optimism. This ain't John Kerry. He's out there, in your face. You're either with him or agin him, to quote the sorry suck-up he'll oust from the White House.

There'll be plenty of time to discover the clay of his feet and the jam of his toenails once he's given us a sweet electoral orgasm not unlike turkey-slapping McCain with a fat canvas sack of fresh uncooked hog jowls.

Did that answer your question?

Aisha: all over (but) the shouting? Have you read the book? I adored it.

Most assuredly excited. I remember despairing at the pale biscuit palette of my 6th Grade classroom's Presidents banner. It loudly limited individual potential. When, a few years later, I toured Salt Lake City's Mormon Museum of Church History and Art, seeing their similarly pasty presidential array, the analogy was all at once too close. Portraits of cultural retardation.

We're ready. We've been ready.

Not American so my opinion is dust in the wind, but I hope he wins.

He may be inexperienced, and maybe all the hype about Change is just that.

But he seems so decent.

Like agent Mulder once said "I want to believe"

Hmmm, might have to run some of his YouTube speeches through my audio processors, see what comes out when played backwards.

I mean, are we in the end-times or not?

Nah, it's just a really really long river that flows through some dimension or something.

I've long wanted to pop back upstream and fix a few earlier mistakes, but apparently physics won't let me.

Stupid physics.

Time is a relation between velocity and mass. Really.

Not that I would easily give up wonderful skiffyesque expressions like 'temporal inertia'. Lord know. I'd sooner give up my Vulcan codiece than that.
