"Marketers have a new name for the age-old tendency to view animals as furry versions of ourselves: “humanization,” a trend that is fueling the explosive growth of the pet industry and the rise of modern pet pharma."

While this is technically correct, we being the dominant influence in these relationships, humanization seems a misleading word.

I would call it non-genetic trans-speciation.

Nonetheless, it is far more likely that the star German shepherd of this article is weird because of its reactions to its keepers' neurotic projection upon it than genetics.

If I lived in a cul-de-sac home in Lafayette, CA, under the care of some neo-yuppies, I'd be spinning in circles too.

Whatever happened to the good old days when people with fucked-up pets took them out and shot them, got a new one and started over?

And, no, you're not allowed to use the friggin' junkie analogy just before you go and feed your dog a fucking behaviour-altering pill.

Actually, it might be better to just shoot the owners.

Lithos should enjoy this one:

Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarizing a song
quote:
A day after the Coldplay album was nominated for seven Grammys, including Record and Song of the Year for "Viva la Vida," Satriani's suit claims that "Viva" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his track "If I Could Fly," from the Is There Love in Space? album.

CNN loves any story that involves the words 'teen cheerleaders' and 'nude pics'

Maybe amongst all the self righteousness somebody could mention that it is fun to exchange naked pics with your partner? Or is it not fun until you are 18?

Shame about ol' Boy George. I always adored his voice. And the early Culture Club wrote some neat tunes and had what Paul McCartney said once of The Rolling Stones in their latge 80s incarnation: "a neat buzzing sound".

Science (well, neurologists from the Univ. of Toledo) proves: Zolpidem makes you write stupid emails in your sleep.

The 44 year old woman went to bed at 10 pm after thaking zolpidem based sleeping meds. The next day it transpired that while she had been asleep, she had logged into her account, remembered her password correctly and sent off three emails.

One of them stated: "Come tomorrow and sort this hell hole out. Dinner and drinks, 4.pm,. Bring wine and caviar only."

Zolpidem on Wikipedia

quote:
New research

Zolpidem has recently been very strongly related to certain instances of patients in a minimally conscious coma state being brought to a fully conscious state. While it was initially given to these supposed permanent coma patients to put them to sleep, it actually brought them to a fully conscious state in which they were capable of communicating and interacting for the first time in years. CT scans have shown that the use of the drug actually does dramatically increase the activity in the frontal lobe of the brain in some patients in a minimally conscious state. Large-scale studies are currently being done to see whether it has the same universal effect on all or most patients in a minimally conscious state.[27] It may be that zolpidem's ability to stimulate the brain, particularly in the semi-comatose, may be related to one of its side-effects, which sometimes causes sleepwalking and other activity while asleep, that appears to observers to be fully conscious activity.

Gothic cats, anyone?

quote:
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - Humane officers said a Pennsylvania woman marketed "gothic kittens" with ear, neck and tail piercings over the Internet. Officers with the SPCA of Luzerne County removed three kittens and a cat from a home outside Wilkes-Barre.
Officer Carol Morrison said the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals raided the home on Wednesday after getting a tip that the woman was selling the pierced kittens on eBay.

"It's unbelievable anybody would do this to kittens," Morrison said.

Charges are likely against the homeowner, whose name was not released.

Morrison said the woman has a pet grooming business in the basement of the home.
