Cat Calls 911 to Help Owner, Police Say (AP)

quote:
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Police aren't sure how else to explain it. But when an officer walked into an apartment Thursday night to answer a 911 call, an orange-and-tan striped cat was lying by a telephone on the living room floor. The cat's owner, Gary Rosheisen, was on the ground near his bed having fallen out of his wheelchair.

Rosheisen said his cat, Tommy, must have hit the right buttons to call 911.

"I know it sounds kind of weird," Officer Patrick Daugherty said, unsuccessfully searching for some other explanation.

But of course! Those begging eyes, all that charade of aloofness and cuteness? All just for fooling humans into feeding and sheltering them. They are in fact, intelligent enough to get a job... they just don't feel like it. Why, that kitten must have thought, 'Mmmh, this guy goes away, who will buy my nibblets?'

My husband was quick to point out that the name Rosheisen is awfully close to "roh Scheißen", and thought that it had to be a prank.

Pete Townshend Warns iPod Users

quote:
Guitarist
Pete Townshend has warned iPod users that they could end up with hearing problems as bad as his own if they don't turn down the volume of the music they are listening to on earphones.

quote:
"I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal components deaf," he said on his Web site.

Iraqi journo working for Guardian detained by troops after requesting interview from US authorities re misuse of Iraqi funds. I read about this on Monday and was waiting to see if any Western news source besides Editor and Publisher and a few little internet sites would pick up the story. Apparently not. Guess it was just a coincidence. Nothing to see here.

Taiwan breeds transgenic, fluorescent, green pig.

Now all we need is for someone to perfect the transgenic, flourescent, green chicken..

Mouse Thrown in Fire Gets Revenge
10 January 2006
A mouse had its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves by running back into the man's house and setting it on fire.
Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner, in New Mexico, United States, said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.
"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mr. Mares said from a motel room.
Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran just beneath a window of the house. The flames spread up the window and throughout the house. All contents of the home were destroyed.
"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Captain Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."
Fires have charred more than 21,200 hectares and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks during unseasonably dry and windy conditions.

Norwegians are such pessimists
The room is a "doomsday vault" designed to hold around 2 million seeds, representing all known varieties of the world's crops. It is being built to safeguard the world's food supply against nuclear war, climate change, terrorism, rising sea levels, earthquakes and the ensuing collapse of electricity supplies. "If the worst came to the worst, this would allow the world to reconstruct agriculture on this planet," says Cary Fowler, director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, an independent international organisation promoting the project.

New Scientist has learned that the Norwegian government is planning to create the seed bank next year at the behest of crop scientists. The $3 million vault will be built deep inside a sandstone mountain lined with permafrost on the Norwegian Arctic island of Spitsbergen. The vault will have metre-thick walls of reinforced concrete and will be protected behind two airlocks and high-security blast-proof doors. It will not be permanently manned, but "the mountains are patrolled by polar bears", says Fowler.

Doesn't mean my agents won't stop stuffing C4 and tiny detonators in those trendy white earphones, Pete. As much as I loved "Won't Get Fooled Again".

Lithos, you are a true defender of the Cause.
You shall go to Vallhalla.
When you get there, have a drink with Odin,
and tell him I'll pay the bill later.
