Internet addiction is a 'clinical disorder'

It targets highly educated, socially awkward men and the middle-aged women who want to hang out with them on the internets.

We'll that excludes the crew that hangs out around here. Right?

quote:
Early research into the subject found highly educated, socially awkward men were the most likely sufferers but more recent work suggests it is now more of a problem for middle-aged women who are spending hours at home on their computers.

Psychiatrist Dr Jerald Block said some sufferers were so addicted to the internet that they required medication or even hospital treatment to curb the time they spent on the web.

He said: "The relationship is with the computer. It becomes a significant other to them. They exhaust emotions that they could experience in the real world on the computer through any number of mechanisms: emailing, gaming, porn."
Well, if they're really going to declare it a "clinical disorder" I'm hope my employer will start accepting it as a valid excuse for my absences.

Yeah right.

Riiiiight, because "the real world" doesn't include the internet?
Because the emotions I experience in email are not really real?

Because if I got invested in "gaming" of the tabletop\pen&paper\D&D nerd variety that would be totally different that being invested in WoW because....um....ok, I give up, how would it be different?

It's almost as if....the internet is...like, kinda, you know, a part of, like, life as we know it or something, and like, people, are you know, like, integrating "it" in to their lives.

Welcome to the future.

Also, I'm not highly educated, so I'm pretty sure I'm safe. Boooyah!

Yep, the origins of the disease.

Personally speaking, I love my new "clinical disorder." I'm excited about adding it to my collection.
