I'm not so sure anymore regarding the inevitability of China being the next super-power.

There's been some amazing progress over the past decade to be sure, but they've got some serious environmental/demographic/political issues to sort out before they start to rival the USA at it's peak.

I'm guessing we're returning to a multi-polar world (correct terminology?) where China will be a big player, but just one of several.

The war has largely eclipsed it now, but remembering back to the first months of the Bush presidency, before September, what it was remarkable for was (a) the rush to rip out legislation in every area from prudential legislation for banks to environmental protections and (b) the rush to deficit by offering massive tax cuts and also massively increasing spending. This is even before the war spending. The 9/11 terrorists won at least in part by getting Bush a second term.

The same tactics we taught them to use in bankrupting Russia when GHWB was in charge.
