we simply don't have the luxury to wait 30 years to decide what 9/11 means.

That's certainly true.

quote:
I have no objection to Kerry raising his Vietnam or post-Vietnam experiences, and letting the public judge for itself. By the same token, Bush should be free to reference 9/11, and let the public judge for itself.

I think we're in agreement about that. I'm just trying to explain why people perceive the contents of the candidates' ads to be different and why some people have found President Bush the Younger's ads offensive while giving Kerry's a pass.

The question is, of course, what would Nader's parallel ad look like? Eek

Stonecutters' Song (From The Simpsons)

Who controls the British crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the martians under wraps?
We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
We do! We do!
Who robs the cave fish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscars night?
We do! We do!

Digging the song, Bellham. No wonder Pynchon appeared on the Simpsons...

It's funny because even though there are little tidbits about the masons that actually might make one actually suspicious, (like the fact that every U.S. president in history has been one) looking at the masons I know, it's hard to believe they're actively conspiring about anything except maybe artificially lowering the prices on alcohol.

Sorry, went for the obvious joke there. Garry Trudeau did a riff on Skull & Bones back in the early 90s, so I guess that's as close to a Simpson's song as we're going to get.

It was funny listening to Slate editor Jacob Weisberg report on the Kerry campaign knowing that Senator Kerry tried to recruit him into Skull and Bones in 1988.

One way to stop a campaign: bombs

All political parties have suspended all electoral acts after the bombing attacks in Madrid.

Out of respect for the dead. Probably the quietest elections in years.

"One way to stop a campaign: bombs"

Frown Campaigns are supposed to provide an alternate basis for political power, to stop people bombing each other to gain power. Sucks when it works the other way around. Frown

And yet, even with the voluntary stop to election acts, the news are becoming an electoral weapon.

If the attack was made by basque separatists, it will not harm the government, and it may benefit their hardline stance.

If it is an Islamic organization, it will benefit the opposition.

I suspect we will only now after the voting.

My wife is currently in Madrid. She takes that line. She is unharmed. But she is not well. Noone can be well after this. And all the spin control now makes me mad. So give me a hovercraft full of eels.

Prayers for your family JRE and everyone involved in this atrocity.

First thing I thought of when I heard of the bombing was, JRE is in Zaragoza. And now you say your wife is in Madrid. Frown
I guess it is natural to first think of the people you know. But during today I am beginning to grasp the immensity of it all. And the atrocity.
Remain strong. We can't let fear win.

Many thanks for your well wishes. My wife is back home in Zaragoza, and participating in the silent demonstration did no good for my cold, but wonders for my heart.

Let's hope this does not become commonplace, that we retain the capacity to be horrified.

I fervently hope so, but it's not looking to good here on this side of the pond Confused
