*sigh* No, he didn't. He started with a longstanding tradition going back to the Babylonians that the entire history of the Earth would be 7000 years long, and then shoe-horned into that timeframe Biblical events, history since the birth of Christ, and a 1000-year Kingdom of God at the end. He added four years because of the original error in calculating the date of the birth of Christ. There is, for what it's worth, no Biblical authority for Ussher's calculation either.
