In the Truth is stranger than fiction department, this was so weird and so Gibson, I had to post it.

unique cell phone

Electronic tattoo display runs on blood
by Lisa Zyga

The tattoo display: "Waterproof and powered by pizza."

Jim Mielke's wireless blood-fueled display is a true merging of technology and body art. At the recent Greener Gadgets Design Competition, the engineer demonstrated a subcutaneously implanted touch-screen that operates as a cell phone display, with the potential for 3G video calls that are visible just underneath the skin.

They made a machine that runs on human blood. Human blood. Jesus titty-fucking Christ, has none of these people ever read a single Sci-Fi story? Machines are getting smarter every day, and these assholes just gave them a taste for our flesh. Nice job there. The military may be making killer death robots, but at least they didn't go ahead and name any of them "SkyNet."

The tattoo display is still just a concept, with no word on plans for commercialization.

I think "concept" in this case just means "idea", unlike a concept car, they haven't actually made one.

Holy shit. What would happen if you had one and began getting wrinkles on your arm? Problems dialing? This is assuming that your body doesn't reject the device or die from multiple tumors first.

But then again, you'd never lose your phone....

Big Grin

I was unclear on this, was the whole thing a concept or did he really implant something in his arm and if he did was it just a non-working prototype or did it actually function?

Great first post though.

Then it wouldn't be too much of a leap to have animated tattoos. The touch-reactive aspect could make them interactive.

EDIT: ...and yes, great first post

animated tattoos.

fuck the cell phone thing, THAT would be far cooler,

a swimming coy fish, a boricua flag that actually waives, the girls on a sailor jerry tattoo would actually bounce when he walks.

They had animated tats in Metropolitan and, um... a Neal Stephenson book, right? Snow Crash or Diamond Age?

Speaking of which, it occurs to me the first Chap of Diamond Age could be called Cruising With Gunhead.

Reminiscent of the program described in Dogfight, though it wasn't described as a tattoo.

Re-imagining a passage from the Mona Lisa Overdrive:
"the black robe open across a tattooed storm of dragons"

From animated tattoos it's only a short step to chameleon skin. And you thought the Panther Moderns were scary...
