Wow... they looked like... dinosaurs.

^^ Well, yes. But the whole skin and soft-tissue thing is something paleontologists have never found in great supply, so many theories about specific dinosaur physiologies have been stuck as theories. I'm thinking of the old controversy as to whether Apatasaurs or Brachiosaurs were able to support their own weight (it's referenced in The Difference Engine), which further defines whether those dinosaurs were wide-ranging grazers like elephants or swamp-waders...
