Good news - cure found for global warming!
Bad news? Well, yes, actually... ----------------------------- "It may be said with rough accuracy that there are three stages in the life of a strong people. First, it is a small power, and fights small powers. Then it is a great power, and fights great powers. Then it is a great power, and fights small powers, but pretends that they are great powers, in order to rekindle the ashes of its ancient emotion and vanity. After that, the next step is to become a small power itself." --GK Chesterton, "Heretics" |

I'm not sure that anything to do with this qualifies as good news, but at least it seems to be over.

I'd say it was good news. Hundreds to 1500 hostages piled on top of each other in a gym with no food or water is not a "negotiate for their freedom" situation. It's a "we plan on killing every one of them for Allah and country" type of situation. The release of 31 of them was likely a stalling tactic to give them additional time to wire the building for explosives, as they've done in the past.
Hurrah for these boys for moving in: I wish them much luck and happy hunting. And if that makes it sound like I'm a bloody-minded bastard, it's because I am. |

seems like it's more complicated.
But something involving kids as hostages shouldn't be on the good news thread. So I'll open another. All you can say is WHAT happened. You do not know why. You will never know why. |

it's all good news here...
after 4 of the dryest months on record we had tons of rain in late august, and the forest I live in didn't burst into flame. Even with tons of rain, my well is still dry, but that just means it has to be deeper... the olympics went off really well, although canada did awfully... then of course there was the republican convention, which if not good news, confirmed my suspicion that the world is insane. I wonder if the people who held up signs saying 'we are safer' know just how many pissed off muslims there are out there with very long memories...George has put you in WAY more danger for a few barrels of oil that are probably unethical to burn in this millenium anyways... but good news is everywhere, it's just not worth reporting on... Conflict drives storylines...sells papers...draws crowds...but good news...huh! I'm going to go make some salsa. |

You know it is actually kind of disturbing all this talk about salsa as a very definite and exact noun? For Spanish-speakers, that is. I mean, I feel compelled to ask "yeah, allright, so your are making sauce. But which one?"
OK, so now I played the smartasshole you may start picking on me. It´s just that I gather by salsa you mean a tomato sauce. Trust me, they are not good at other sauces, but tomato sauces, man, bleeding spaniards have about a hundred of them with specific names, and then like some few billions piled in the generic "salsa de tomate" file. The tomato sauce (or if you prefer, salsa de tomate) for pasta preferred by Spaniards is Bolognese (they seem to ignore the fact that you are not requested to use tomato for pasta every time), and a fairly good one (I thought of it with all this capers talk) is a tuna-tomato sauce.
-Finely cut two pieces of garlic (or more, or less, as you prefer. I mean, I am a brit and I love garlic, but I know most of my fellow britons would actually prefer to chop their own genitalia off before tasting the stuff), and fry it lightly with olive oil. Preferably Spanish, or, if you cannot find it, any italian brand will do. Most Italian olive brands actually use Spanish olive oil anyway. - Once the garlic gets a nice yellowy colour (even tan will do, but careful not to burn them), throw in 300 grams of chopped tomato, or 300 ml canned tomato (fried or mashed). - Add tuna. How much is up to you. The more you add the thicker it will be. - Capers are not mandatory. Throw as many as you wish, or none, if that is your preference. - Stir for a couple minutes and that´s it. Optionally you may add some chopped onion (it tends to sweeten the mix). MvR Making it worse, how could it be worse!? Jehova, Jehova, Jehova! |

I guess the Hubble counts as good news (here's hoping it keeps sending images like this for a long time yet):

I can't help thinking what ever happened in that photo is only good news from this distance.
